Plex has announced the new Plex Media Player to take the place of Plex Home Theater. Plex Media Player was built from the ground up and is powered by mpv, an open source project which is actively being developed and primary contributor @wm4 has now become part of the Plex team.
The goal for Plex Media Player was to play just about any format out there and look good doing it on just about any TV or device available. Within the development of Plex Media Player they’ve contributed code for an MMAL hardware decoder for the Raspberry Pi as well as improvements to Qt which is what Plex uses to power the cross-platform nature of the application.
As we say good-bye to Plex Home Theater we give a warm welcome to Plex Media Player and look forward to future improvements the Plex team is making.
P.S. Plex Pass users can download Plex Media Player now here, you’re still able to download Plex Home Theater here if you’d rather continue or would rather still use it.
